NZ Govt Keyboard Focus Loserboard
A ranking of NZ Government websites with the worst keyboard focus indicators.
Loserboards
How this works
The Loserboard tracks missing keyboard focus indicators on the first 10 focusable elements per page.
Lower numbers = better keyboard accessibility.
- 🟢 0 missing indicators
- Test passed
- 🔴 >0 missing indicators
- Test failed
The Keyboard Focus Loserboard
Background information
The New Zealand Government automatically tests keyboard focus indicators on all its public-facing websites using the Centralised Web Accessibility Checker (CWAC) monitoring programme. I have created the following loserboard from this data. Data will be updated quarterly.
This data was collected on: Loading…
Focus indicator testing:
- Limited to 10 focusable elements: CWAC tests the first 10 keyboard-focusable elements on each page to ensure they have visible focus indicators when tabbed to with the keyboard. Missing indicators can make it impossible for keyboard users to interact with the web page.
- Critical for accessibility: Keyboard focus indicators are essential for users who navigate with keyboards, including many disabled users who cannot use a mouse.
Tips:
- Share filtered results — search for something, then copy the URL from your address bar and shame websites into fixing their keyboard accessibility
Limitations:
- Testing scope — CWAC only tests the first 10 focusable elements per page, so some focus issues may not be captured. This test is a very low bar, if a website fails this test, it is serious.
- Test reliability — this test reliably confirms failures of WCAG SC 1.4.7 Focus Visible within the first 10 focusable elements on the page. This means, if it detects an issue, it is a confirmed issue. However, this test cannot indicate whether a website is fully WCAG SC 1.4.7 Focus Visible conformant.
