About Callum McMenamin
Kia ora — I’m Callum, and I lead OpenAccess.
I founded OpenAccess to help organisations build genuinely accessible digital products. As someone with vision impairment, I know how important accessible design is — and how often it’s done poorly.
Before OpenAccess, I worked as a Web Standards Consultant at the Department of Internal Affairs, where I:
- contributed to the NZ Government’s Web Accessibility Guide
- built an automated accessibility testing system that scans every single public-facing government website, called the Centralised Web Accessibility Checker (CWAC)
- established the Government Digital Accessibility Forum, which I think is the largest digital accessibility event run by the New Zealand Government.
I also worked at the Ministry of Social Development, where I helped develop its Digital Accessibility Team.
Beyond my professional work, I’ve campaigned for accessibility improvements across Aotearoa — from speaking out against the repeal of the Plain Language Act to raising awareness about inaccessible EFTPOS terminals on RNZ.
Now I’m bringing that experience — both professional and personal — to OpenAccess.
