Accessible pedestrian crossings: New Zealand’s special beeping buttons
I made a short video about the PB/5 pedestrian crossing button and its design.
Most of us press a beeping pedestrian crossing button and never think much of it. I decided to explore its design and history, and discovered it’s a deeply considered piece of accessibility engineering and design.
The PB/5 pedestrian crossing button dates back to 1984 from Australia. It’s a design that has lasted 42 years, spans multiple countries, and is showing no signs of obsolescence. A design so good it needs no updates.
In my latest video, I share what I learnt about the PB/5 button, to honour its impact on accessibility across Aotearoa, and to help more people learn about the impact accessible design has for disabled people like me.
